We are an applied research organization whose purpose is to teach executives the leadership beliefs, behaviors, and competencies that are needed to achieve successful Lean transformations. We do this through book publishing, corporate speaking, and training.
We present Lean as a comprehensive
management system for the entire enterprise, not as a narrowly-focused
set of management tools used only in service or manufacturing operations. The result is a stronger
competitive position through lower costs, margin expansion, increased
market share, higher quality goods and services, and stable long-term
growth.
Our executive
education course is designed to be specific and actionable,
so you'll know exactly what you have to do at the conclusion of each training session.
We thank our customers past, present, and future for their support. It is through their business with us that funds our ongoing applied research in Lean management, on topics ranging from Lean leadership, the history of Lean, and supply chain.
Firsts
We are pleased to have been the originator of several new practical applications of Lean principles and tools, including:

- Created new leadership improvement models that are much more practical, specific, and actionable compared to other approaches: Lean Behaviors® + Continuous Personal ImprovementSM, and Value Stream Mapping for LeadershipSM.
- Identified and described the “eighth waste” – Behavioral Waste®, and its impact on leadership effectiveness and organizational capability building.
- Wrote the first book that showed the application of Lean as a management system for the entire enterprise: Better Thinking, Better Results.
- First to apply Lean principles and practices to the design and delivery of graduate courses in higher education, and led the first-ever kaizens in higher education to improve courses and an academic program.
- Wrote and published the first book that showed the application of Lean as a management system for the entire enterprise: Better Thinking, Better Results.
- Wrote and published the first book Lean leadership workbook, Practical Lean Leadership.
- Wrote the first book on how to sustain a Lean transformation, REAL LEAN: The Keys to Sustaining Lean Management.

Frequently
Asked Questions
What do you do?
I am an educator, not a consultant. That means I teach senior managers how to lead a Lean transformation using leadership principles and practices that are unique to the world of Lean management. I use a more realistic human-technical approach to Lean leadership, instead of the common analytical tool-based approach or the imprecise organizational behavior approach. This enables executives to be in charge of their company's Lean transformations, not consultants. I offer the simplest and most practical model of Lean leadership available anywhere.
How are you different?
Most other training organizations simply teach they client what they were taught years ago. We are an applied research organization that creates valuable new contributions to the body of Lean knowledge which are incorporated into my leadership training. I combine detailed technical rigor with practical, real-world utility. The result is a simpler and more direct approach to teaching executives how to lead a Lean business.
Why should I select you for our Lean leadership training?
My training is simple and practical. It consists mostly of material that I created and validated in actual business settings, and it is fully consistent with Lean principles and practices. I give executives a precise understanding of Lean management, and provide them with specific and practical direction for daily action.
When will the next training session be offered?
I do not offer open enrollment workshops. Rather, the training is specific to a particular organization's needs. Typically, I train 10-25 senior managers from a single company. Training is available by special arrangement only.
When should we train our leadership team?
It could be at any point in your Lean efforts, from day-one to after 10 years or more.
How much does the training cost?
Pricing is flat rate inclusive of all training materials and related expenses.

What is Lean management?
Lean management is a non-zero-sum principle-based management system focused on creating value for end-use customers and eliminating waste, unevenness, and unreasonableness using the scientific method. It is not a group of tools or a program or an initiative. The two key principles of Lean management are "Continuous Improvement" and "Respect for People." It is a simpler and more effective way to manage a business, in part because it does not divide key stakeholders who will seek to work against you.
Is Lean management only for manufacturing businesses?
No, Lean management can be used in any type of organization. It applies to service businesses, as well as government, non-profits, and start-up businesses.
Is Lean management theoretical or practical?
It is practical. The people who originally developed Lean principles and practices were business practitioners, not academics, striving to improve business processes using new ideas and creativity. Our training was created by former managers and is practical.
How can I learn more about Lean management?
Read our award-winning books Better Thinking, Better Results or Practical Lean Leadership. Or, try our smaller books for time-pressed executives: REAL LEAN, Volumes One through Five, and Practical Lean Leadership.
How can I get copies of your journal papers?
Most of our published papers are available here (click on "Papers" tab). Or, you can get copies from: 1) the publisher Emerald Group (UK), 2) your corporate library or information service, or 3) the library of the college or university you graduated from.
